Female Sumo Wrestler Fights Sexism in New Netflix Documentary “Little Miss Sumo”

When you think of Japanese sports there are usually two things that spring to mind: crazy TV game shows and sumo wrestling. What you may not know is that female sumo wrestlers are banned from taking part in any professional competitions. Wrestler Hiyori, in this new Netflix documentary, will challenge that rule or face having to retire at the age of 21. “Little Miss Sumo” arrives on October 28th.

Banned from competing professionally, female sumo wrestling champion Hiyori will have to retire at the age of 21. Fighting tradition, Hiyori embarks on a remarkable journey, confronting obstacles both inside and outside the ring in an attempt to help change Japan’s national sport forever.
