“Okja” (sorry, but I still don’t know how to pronounce that) will be arriving on Netflix on June 28th but what exactly is it? Well, in a nutshell it’s a film about scientific modification to produce the perfect pig. It certainly sounds entertaining and the trailer, shown at the end of this article, gives a good idea of what to expect.
Benedict Seal (who is one of our film reviewers at New On Netflix as well as other outlets such as Bloody Disgusting, Vague Visages and the Super Bailey Bros Podcast) has recently spent the best part of 2 weeks at Cannes Film Festival and saw the upcoming Netflix Original* movie. Please do go read his full review over at Bloody Disgusting or the Super Bailey Bros Podcast but here are a few quotes:
“a family-friendly ‘girl and her giant pig’ story”
“liberally used, gratuitous even, f-bombs, and the disturbing scientific experimentation body horror”
“The frequent Korean dialogue, the jumble of tones and the lack of a clear demographic don’t exactly make it the easiest of sells.”
“Okja” seems to be a real mixed bag but one that Netflix are happy with – why else would they buy the rights to it? Perhaps it is a case of ‘no one else would, so we will’. Personally I think it will be an interesting film to watch but, perhaps, not one I’d pay to see in the cinema – maybe Netflix *is* the ideal home for “Okja” after all. What are your thoughts?
