A new Netflix Original series, “Atypical” is set to arrive on August 11th. The series follows 18 year old Sam, who is on the autism spectrum, as he decides to start dating and gain more independence. As a father of an autistic child, I’m quite interested in how the series plays out – not only how Sam’s life progresses but also how his parents deal with the changes Sam’s independence will invariably bring about. Plus, it looks funny!
You can see a short clip of the comedy series after this synopsis from Deadline:
Sam decides it is time to go on a date, find a girlfriend and hopefully love, a journey that sets Sam’s mother, Elsa (Jason Leigh), on her own life-changing path as her son seeks more independence.
Sam’s entire family must adjust to change, all while exploring the question: What does it really mean to be “normal”? Michael Rapaport plays Sam’s father, Doug, who wants to better connect with and understand his son.
