Cursed

Katherine Langford takes on a very different role to that of Hannah Baker, ’13 Reasons Why’. In ‘Cursed’ she is  ‘Nimue’, a teenage sorcerous who teams up with a young Arthur, in order to save her people. This latest reimagining of the King Arthur legend was primarily filmed in Surrey, England on a disused army base. The ancient coming of age series has been heralded by some as being reflective of modern-day problems such as unnecessary war and religious terror involving the needless destruction of the world by man. All lighthearted stuff, ya know! Devon Terrell plays a young Arthur, future king of England as the unlikely pair begin a quest together to find Merlin the wizard to gain his help. Langford’s character Nimue is based upon the character of the legend of the same name who later became the ‘Lady of the Lake’. Traditionally Arthur and Nimue do not meet so early on in their timelines and this new retelling follows the pathway adopted by the writer and illustrator of the book by Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler. ‘Cursed’ the illustrated novel was released late 2019 and was already set to be a TV series for Netflix. The series consists of ten episodes.

Father Soldier Son

A deeply moving and candid documentary following one family through their journey of ten years. A single dad’s life as a soldier through the ranks before injury took him from his military life. The film documents the struggle throughout the ten years and follows Brian Eisch and his boys as they grow into men with independent thoughts about their own adult lives as American men. The touching film is an interesting examination of masculinity in all its forms.

Jack Whitehall: I’m Only Joking

British comedian Jack Whitehall is back with another special, this time without his father in tow. Filmed in Wembley, London, Jack entertains a huge stadium audience with his latest stand up show ‘I’m Only Joking’. The show features Whitehall producing laughs about everything from relationships, coffee shop milk and comparing sex to a late-arrival at the theatre! He’s funny, he’s posh and most of all he’s quintessentially British.

Fear City: New York vs The Mafia

The second of our highlighted documentaries this week is ‘Fear City: New York vs The Mafia’. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, New York was firmly under the grip of the Mafia. They didn’t just have fingers in pies, they owned the bakers that made them. With their incessant grip on industries including construction and the unions that upheld them, the Mafia was seemingly untouchable. People were losing or fearing for their lives until a group of federal agents decided enough was enough. How did they tackle such a dangerous task? The documentary explores just how corrupted the city was and the means they had to go to, to restore law and order.

Love On The Spectrum

This four-part docuseries follows individuals who are looking for love just as in other dating shows but with one difference, all of the participants are on the autism spectrum. The show aims to find a match for those wanting a life partner and with many autistic individuals not ever experiencing dating, ‘Love On The Spectrum’ provides a platform of opportunity. Similar show formats have been around a while such as Britains Channel 4 series ‘The Undateables’ (questionable title) and have seen relative success. Whilst inevitably some see this show format as using people to provide an audience with entertainment, the overwhelming majority seem to find it a touching, positive platform to enable all individuals to find love. So much so that participants apply to be on the show year on year, many of whom are on the autism spectrum. We can’t speak for how it is to be handled in this new American version but we hope that it is as sensitively presented as possible and not derogatory by any means. We are big autism advocates over here at New On Netflix HQ and we really don’t want to see any negativity surrounding this issue.
