Rotten

The ground-breaking documentary about the food industry is back for a second season. This time the six-episode series is focussing on edibles including chocolate, avocado and even bottled water. In a plea for the human race to take some responsibility for what we consume, the documentary exposes some of the hidden facts behind what we pay for including; sourcing, ingredients and processing, forcing us to think about how we can make a difference in a profit-fuelled market with one interviewee claiming; “Consumer power can go a very long way to induce positive change”.

In The Tall Grass

Based on the Stephen King novella, need we say more? Ok so firstly the novella was co-written with Joe Hill and as a movie adaptation for Netflix, written and directed by  Vincenzo Natali. The synopsis? A woman and her brother hear a child calling for help from within a tall grass field. They venture into the grass (when we say tall grass, we mean like above-adult-height tall, maze-like grass) to look for said boy only to lose each other and themselves in a nightmare. For those afraid of getting lost, supernatural forces, scary kids in mazes – this is terrifying. Bring it on…

Raising Dion

Dion (Ja’Siah Young) and his mother Nicole (Alisha Wainright) are adapting to life after the untimely death of Dion’s father (played by Michael B Jordan) when Dion begins to display supernatural powers. His mother’s fight to protect him from those who wish to exploit him is essential as she attempts to discover the origin of his ability and how to harness it to allow him to live life to the full. Whilst we were disappointed to find this is a series, not a film, with only nine episodes, it is reasonably bite-sized and who doesn’t love a cute kid from a single-parent family who has superpowers enough to watch nine episodes, am I right?

Deon Cole: Cole Hearted

Comedian Deon Cole graces our screens this Friday with his debut Netflix special ‘Cole Hearted’. With material some may recognise from his part in the series ‘The Standups’ (a series of mini standup sets from upcoming comedians on the scene) Cole fills his hour-long special with some new material as he speaks his truth. Stories of speeding tickets to sex and everything between, Cole delivers a comedy set that details his life and man does he end up in some crazy situations.

Rhythm and Flow

So we’ve had plenty of baking contests, dating and even property realtors with Netflix label ‘Competition Reality TV Series’ and Now Netflix presents ‘Rhythm and Flow’. ‘Cardi B’ along with fellow hip-hop artists ‘Chance the Rapper’ and ‘T.I. “TIP” Harris’ must judge contestants on their talents to find the number one rap artist. The show features other big names from the industry; ‘DJ Khaled’, ‘Nipsey Hussle’ and ‘Snoop Dogg’ to name a few. Netflix is staggering the release of the ten-episode series with the initial four episodes (the auditions round) landing this week on Wednesday 9th October. Viewers don’t need to wait too long though as the second stint of episodes is planned for the week after on 16th October with the end of the show arriving on the 23rd of October. Whilst the show does seem like the sweary, grown-up, big brother of shows like The Voice and X-Factor, those who love this genre of music are in for a treat as the wealth of talent and the ruthlessness of the judging makes for a fast-paced reality competition series with grit.
