All this week’s Netflix Originals (Available from Friday 7th June 2019)

One of the great things about Netflix is their Netflix Original content – be it films or series made by Netflix themselves or exclusive content available only on Netflix after it airs on regular TV. Every week we will give you a round-up of the new Netflix Originals becoming available in the next week. We will aim to post every week on Thursday evening with what will be available over the coming week. Perfect if you’re looking to check out what new Originals are available to watch over your weekend or if you’re planning a week-long Netflix binge watch! The Black Godfather

Clarence Avant was an original influencer in Hollywood and a mentor and ‘Godfather’ to many in the black community looking to break into entertainment. He was the one to go to in music, film and television, protecting the rights of his proteges in the process. As a film producer, entrepreneur and music mogul, ‘Avant’ made it his mission to promote black individuals in the industry. As a result, he is influential and respected by some of the biggest names in entertainment, nicknamed ‘The Black Godfather’.

Elisa and Marcela

This period drama film tells the tale of ‘Elisa Sánchez Loriga’ and ‘Marcela Gracia Ibeas’ the first same-sex couple to be married in Spain. Elisa adopted the identity of a man in order to marry her love and this film is an adaptation of the events that took place before, during and after the wedding. A true story of forbidden love set in 1901, Galicia, Spain.

I Am Mother

‘I Am Mother’ is a sci-fi thriller about a young girl played by Clara Ruggard who has been raised single-handedly by a programmed android named ‘Mother’ (voiced by Rose Byrne). Believing everything she has ever been told about humanity she is shocked when a woman (played by Hilary Swank) appears, rocking her world with news from outside. Now she must decide who to believe and take action.

Rock My Heart

Seventeen-year-old Jana (Lena Klenke) is fed up with her life being controlled by her congenital heart condition. As her parents try to convince her to undergo vital but dangerous surgery, Jana longs to escape it all. When she meets ‘Rock My Heart’ a feisty horse that responds to no one’s command except Jana, she is convinced she can train and race him. Paul Brenner (Dieter Hallervorden) is Rock’s trainer and is convinced of Jana’s ability to race and save him from his debt but he knows nothing of her heart problem. Jana’s friend Sami (Emilio Sakraya) knows how life-threatening this could be and tries to convince Jana it is too dangerous but life-threatening means exhilarating to Jana and she will not be deterred.

Armistead Maupin’s Tale Of The City

Barbary Lane is where Mary-Ann Singleton (Laura Linney) calls home. It’s where she left her husband and adopted daughter (Ellen Page) to pursue her career two decades ago. The series is based on the book series by Armistead Maupin. Viewers may remember the books were transformed into a screen production in the late nineties/early noughties that also starred Laura Linney. As Mary-Ann returns after so long, she soon realises that her daughter doesn’t know the truth about her adoption and is quickly engulfed in a web of other intricate stories that are woven into the tenants of 28 Barbary Lane. Olympia Dukakis also returns for this new sequel adaptation as the landlady and surrogate mother to her tenants, Anna Madrigal.

Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story By Martin Scorsese

Martin Scorsese’s story of Bob Dylan and the tour he performed during 1975. The film is part musical documentary, part concert footage and includes interviews including with Dylan himself. The only interview he gave in a decade. The story captures the feeling of America in the mid-1970s and to some extent, the experience Dylan offered his fans through his original music.
