Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, Lily James, Johnny Flynn, Ben Chaplin, Ken Stott, and Monica Dolan will all star in Netflix’s film adaptation of John Preston’s novel “The Dig”. The novel, and film, give a fictionalised account of the 1939 archaeological dig at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, UK that has lasted for five centuries and uncovered an incredibly-well preserved medieval burial site from the 6th and 7th centuries. Fiennes plays architect Basil Brown with Mulligan playing Edith Pretty – who owned the land where the dig was initiated.
Producer Gabby Tana told Empire that “It’s about the unearthing of a lot of things. It’s a deep excavation into people’s stories”.
As WWII looms, a wealthy widow hires an amateur archaeologist to excavate the burial mounds on her estate. When they make a historic discovery, the echoes of Britain’s past resonate in the face of it’s uncertain future.
For a split second I thought this would be a film adaptation of Spielberg’s 90s PC adventure gamer…
While I’m still looking forward to this Dig movie, ohhhh bummer….
