Full List of Everything Added to Netflix UK This Week (20th December 2019)

Another week has passed and, in case you missed our social media feeds, we’re here to give you the run down on this week’s additions just in time for your weekend binge sessions. Here we will give you our top picks as well as a full list of everything added to the streaming service in the last week. So here are our top picks from this week’s additions on Netflix UK:

With less than a week to go until Christmas Netflix has given us almost 80 “gifts” to choose from – 60 of those are films so it’s going to be hard to pick just a few highlights this week. The most popular movie added this week has been the dark comedy The Death of Stalin from director Armando Iannucci. The film follows the comic chaos in the Soviet Union after Stalin suddenly dies and the various ministers trying to become his successor. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World sees the titular Scott have his heart captured by delivery girl Ramone but in order to win her over he must destroy her seven evil exes. The Thing, from 2011, is a sci-fi/horror that serves as a prequel to the 1982 classic and tells the story of Norwegian scientists who find an alien vessel frozen in Antarctica which gets released and begins to wreak havoc… Chris Pratt stars in Jurassic World – a new theme park built on a remote island with real life dinosaurs but a new creature escapes and terrorises the island.

Musical biopic Ray tells the story of rhythm and blues legend Ray Charles, who rose from obscurity and overcame his struggles to become world famous. 12 Years a Slave is another biographical film this time about Solomon Northup, a freeborn black man who is abducted from New York and sold into slavery. Anthony Hopkins stars in The Two Popes which is set during a key turning point for the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI forms a surprising friendship with the future Pope Francis.

Set in the North of England, Funny Cow sees a female comedian facing hostility at week and at home while she tries to build a career in the male-dominated world of stand-up comedy. And for something a bit more light-hearted there is the late-night comedy Knocked Up which follows Alison, pregnant after a one-night stand, who tries to make things work with the slacker who knocked her up.

For TV this week we have the long-awaited Netflix Original The Witcher. This new fantasy series is based on the same series of books as the popular computer game series and tells the story of Geralt of Rivia. Geralt, played by Henry Cavill, is a mutated monster-hunter for hire, journeys toward his destiny in a turbulent world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. If anime is to your taste then, following the recent addition of the film, we now have the series of Girls und Panzer -a somewhat bizarre series set in an all-girls school that specialises in tank battles. We have also been given season 5 of fantasy series Good Witch and season 4 of reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars.

Some great documentaries have been added this week to including the 3-part mini-series Don’t F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer which tells the story of an online group that were trying to track down a man who posted videos of him killing cats online and how, when things took a turn for the worse, they assist the police in a murder case. While the subject matter is quite distressing, I can confirm that the full, graphic videos are not shown in the documentary. Sports documentary Hope: One in a Billion tells the story of Gift Ngoepe, the first African to play for Major League Baseball and After the Raid is a short documentary that looks at the emotional aftermath of an immigration raid in a small town.

For families and younger viewers we have new episodes of animated series Steven Universe with season 4 and (most of) season 5 being added. And for animal lovers there is the horse-themed animated movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and the live action Dolphin Tale.
