It can often seem like all the good stuff gets removed from Netflix – just as you wanted to watch it. But just how true is that belief? While it’s certainly not something specific to Netflix, licensed content does, indeed, get removed. But what many people forget is that new licensed content (as well as Originals) also get added. This keeps the available content fresh and is something that all the streaming platforms do. Even the content on the UK’s BBC iPlayer changes fairly regularly. In the USA, however, the situation is changing more rapidly as more and more studios create their own streaming services – HBO Max, Peacock and, of course, Disney+. As such, in the States, it may feel like Netflix subscribers are losing out as less licensed content is available.
In my personal opinion, licensed content should be treated as a bonus, a gift – if you will. There’s no guarantee how long it will be available – it could be 3 months, it could be 6 month, a year, 2 years – even longer sometimes. But at the end of the day Netflix don’t own that content so it could, at any time, disappear – and end up on a competing service such as Amazon’s Prime Video or the studio’s own service. At present there are over 2,000 Original films, TV series and documentaries on Netflix – these are here to stay. The other 4,000 or so things are licensed content that will change on an almost daily basis. Despite the launch of more and more competitors to Netflix, available content has still been increasing throughout 2020 – albeit in AMerica Netflix has seen the smallest growth in numbers of the countries we monitor here at New on Netflix.
So let’s see just how much content has been removed, and added, over the year.
