Netflix Announces All-Star Cast for New Film “Shirley” Based on the Life of Trailblazer Shirley Chisholm

The cast for a new film based on the life of political activist and trailblazer Shirley Chisholm has been announced. “Shirley” will star Regina King (“The Harder They Fall”) as the titular Shirley Chisholm – the first African American woman in Congress (1968) and the first woman and African American from one of the two major political parties to run for president of the United States in 1972.

“Shirley” is described as ‘the intimate portrayal of trailblazing political icon Shirley Chisholm, the first Black Congresswoman and the first Black woman to run for President of the U.S, and the cost of accomplishment for Shirley herself’. It aims to tell the story of Chisholm’s boundary-breaking and historic presidential campaign, based on exclusive and extensive conversations with family, friends and those who knew her best.

The film also stars Lance Reddick (“John Wick 1-4”), Lucas Hedges (“Manchester by the Sea”), Christina Jackson (“Swagger”), Michael Cherrie (“Home Again”), Dorian Missick (“For Life”), Amirah Vann (“Underground”), W. Earl Brown (“Deadwood”), with AndrĂ© Holland (“Passing”) and Terrence Howard (“Empire”).
