Netflix Removes Episodes of “Community” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Due to Black Face

After the recent removal of “Little Britain”, “Come Fly With Me” and some Chris Lilley shows Netflix have now removed a number of individual episodes from the popular shows “Community” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”. The episodes involved the ‘blacking up’ of a number of characters and you can see the full list of episodes that have been removed below. Sony Pictures Television, who created “Community” are said to be in “support” of Netflix’s decision and Hulu also removed the episode in question.

The episode numbers on the affected shows have been adjusted so it’s not clear that there are now ‘gaps’ in the episode list when browsing Netflix.

Community – removed episodes

Season 2, Episode 14: Advanced Dungeon’s and Dragons
In this episode Chang is painted fully black and Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown) says “So we’re just going to ignore the hate crime, huh?” with Chang replying: “I’m a dark elf or a drow.”  This particular episode also had a great storyline about bullying so it’s a shame to see it leave.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – removed episodes

Season 4, Episode 3: America’s Next Top Paddy’s Billboard Model Contest
Season 6, Episode 9: Dee Reynolds: Shaping America’s Youth
Season 8, Episode 2: The Gang Recycles Their Trash
Season 9, Episode 9: The Gang Makes Lethal Weapon 6
Season 14, Episode 3: Dee Day

All the “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” episodes contained blacking up.

  1. I have a feeling Netflix isn’t solely to blame most of Chris Lilleys stuff is gone except for his Netflix show lunatics which is still there and he was in blackface in that so its showing how it’s the rights holders and whenever people have contacted Netflix or other services about removals they come back with “licensing issues” I feel the only show that really did seem to go out of its way to be quite offensive about it was little Britain and come fly with me. The rest have been pathetic excuses of censorship based on no context.

  2. Can netflix please remove coming to america. Eddie murphy plays a handful or characters. One of which is an old white jewish man. It was funny in 1988 but in 2020 i suddenly find it offensive.

  3. Been watching Monty Python’s Flying Circus on Netflix during lockdown and there’s quite a few instances of blackface in that which I found disappointing but not entirely unexpected given when it was made xxx
