Netflix Tests Its Psychic Skills with New Feature: Downloads For You

It’s been three years since Netflix introduced Smart Downloads whereby your next episode would be downloaded and ready on your device for when you needed it. Today the streaming giant has gone a step further and has launched “Downloads For You” – a new feature that can automatically download recommended shows or movies to your mobile device based on your tastes. So if you’re ever stuck without an internet connection there will always be something available on your device to watch. The feature has launched today on Android and will be tested soon on iOS.

Of course you can choose not to use this new feature but if you do want to opt-in then here’s how you can do it:

  1. Go to the Downloads tab on your mobile device and toggle on Downloads For You.
  2. Choose the amount of content you want downloaded to your device (1GB, 3GB, or 5GB) and click Turn On. The more space you allow, the more recommendations Netflix will download for you.

  1. Christ no – the last thing I need is Netflix downloading crap that I don’t want to watch.

5 years ago, Netflix was a perfectly good service. Since then, every change they’ve done has made it worse. Automatically starting shows in the background when you want to view the info pages? No. Pop ups to replace the show pages, which then take you back to the home page rather than your list? No.

Now we’ve got this nonsense in the mobile apps? The only reason I’ve kept them on my phone is because it might occasionally be useful to manage my watchlist from a mobile. But if we are going to see it doing nonsense in the background, then I’m just going to delete it.
