Last year it was announced that Netflix had bought the rights to Studio Lambert’s reality TV format as used in Channel 4’s “The Circle”. Overall there will be three local versions with one each from the USA, France and Brazil. We now have a release date for the American version as 1st January and it is being advertised as a ‘3-week event’ meaning we will likely get new episodes added either daily or every few days – like with the recent Rhythm + Flow. In “The Circle” contestants live in separate apartments in a single building and do not meet face-to-face during the competition. They communicate through a special voice-activated social media platform and rate each other frequently. Unpopular players are “blocked” and ultimately the most popular player wins a cash prize. Since they only know each other through their online dialogue and profiles, players can choose whether to present a true or fictional version of themselves. It’s a game exploring questions of honesty and trust when people can’t see each other in the flesh.
In The Circle you never know who you’re playing against as contestants bond, flirt, and plot, all in an effort to earn clout exclusively through a unique social media platform. Everyone’s competing to gain influence and avoid getting voted out. But who’s for real and who’s a catfish? With $100k on the line, what would you do – and who would you be – to win?
Don’t believe everything you see online…
