In She Dies Tomorrow Amy is ravaged by the notion that she is going to die tomorrow, which sends her down a dizzying emotional spiral. When her skeptical friend Jane discovers Amy’s feeling of imminent death to be contagious, they both begin bizarre journeys through what might be the last day of their lives. Finally for films we have Bombay Rose a beautiful hand-painted animation created by award winning animator Gitanjali Rao, where amidst the bustle of a magnetic and multifaceted city, the budding love between two dreamers is tested by duty and religious divides.

Since February there have been over 200 Scandinavian films added to Netflix UK this week they include Barnen fran frostmofjället which is based on a classic children’s story, and sees seven orphan siblings and their goat make a difficult journey over the mountains to find new parents. En Djungelsaga is set in the Bastar jungle of India, where a young boy encounters a leopard near his tribe’s village that brings fear, hostility and dark memories of the past. Hur Många Kramar Finns det i Världen is a comedy about a successful New York-based commercial cinematographer, who is contacted by his old childhood friend Peter, who invites him to come to a small Swedish city Hudiksvall and help him make a film about his daughter’s friends. So he accepts the offer and leaves the hectic city behind for a nice relaxing summer in Sweden.

Also added this week were a number of Romanian films including Luna verde a contemporary story of young people in search of happiness which one imagines coming from unseen meetings with people “hooked” on the Internet, the acquisition of works of art, from driving a luxury car in psychedelic music, theatre, of money, for love. O luna în Thailanda where on a New Year’s Eve in Bucharest, a twentysomething dumps his clingy girlfriend and spends the evening convincing himself that his ex is his true love. In Perfect sãnãtos a young man trying to solve the puzzle of his father’s last moments rattles the life of a quiet town and unburies unwanted truths. His compulsive quest becomes a downward spiral of love, lust and lies.

Continuing with the non english additions we have a few Turkish films this week including Paper Lives where an ailing waste warehouse worker Mehmet takes a small boy under his wing and must soon confront his own traumatic childhood. In Sen Benim HerSeyimsin when an old fling shows up with his infant child, a man-child must take on the role of father and create a fairytale world for his daughter. In Çarsi Pazar the slacker owner of a public bath house rallies his community to save it when a big developer comes to town to close it down and open a new mall.

For TV this week we have the reality show Marriage or Mortgage where a wedding planner and a real estate agent compete to win the hearts and budgets of spouses-to-be. Will they pick fairy-tale nuptials or a dream home? Bombay Begums sees five ambitious women from various walks of life navigate dreams, desires and disappointments in modern Mumbai. Dealer is a french found footage series which sees tensions erupt when two filmmakers infiltrate an area ruled by gangs to shoot a music video for a rapper. In The One love and lies spiral when a DNA researcher helps discover a way to find the perfect partner, and creates a bold new matchmaking service. Finally for TV we have the Spanish series Quiet where the lives of three Chilean teenage misfits converge as they try to find their place in an unequal society through hip-hop and lasting friendships. Also added this week was Paradise PD part 3 and season 2 of the Korean series Love Alarm.

For documentary fans this week we have The Houseboat where with plenty of passion and little know-how, two musicians undertake a daunting project: turn a late singer’s houseboat into a creative musical space. Last Chance U: Basketball which sees the “Last Chance U” creators hit the hardwood in East Los Angeles as a coach with strong convictions leads young men who hope to fulfil major college potential.

  1. I never said I did. Other companies are concentrating on putting out quality movies and shows. Netflix are giving us Swedish movies from the 1920s. Of course there will be people who want to watch it but NETFLIX are not Criterion or the BFI, the numbers must be extremely small. They lost subs in Sweden and this seems to be knee jerk reaction to that.

At the moment they seem to be riding on the back of a couple of acclaimed shows and a couple of decent movies but hrowing things at the wall and seeing what sticks can’t last as a business model. Disney Plus have racked up 100 million subscribers in a year, they need to be careful.
