A popular film on Netflix UK this week is this year’s Ava. In this action packed thriller, starring Jessica Chastain and Colin Farrell, an elite assassin wrestling with doubts about her work scrambles to protect herself — and her estranged family — after a hit goes dangerously wrong. Also added this week is the British musical drama Wild Rose: after leaving prison, a scrappy working-class Glasgow mum pursues her dream of becoming a Nashville country singer, while learning tough life lessons. In Searching for Bobby Fischer a prepubescent chess prodigy refuses to harden himself in order to become a champion like the famous but unlikable Bobby Fischer. In The Front Runner Presidential candidate Gary Hart’s promising 1988 campaign faces an unprecedented undermining when affair rumours ignite an unstoppable scandal. Funny Boy explores Arjie’s sexual awakening from a young boy to a teenager who falls in love with a male classmate, just as political tensions escalate between the Sinhalese and Tamils in the years leading up to the 1983 uprisings. In Stage Mother after her estranged son’s abrupt death, a church choir director inherits his San Francisco drag bar and finds an unexpected new family in his friends. Finally for films we have The Prom where a group of down-on-their-luck Broadway stars shake up a small Indiana town as they rally behind a teen who just wants to attend prom with her girlfriend.

Netflix UK has also had some documentaries that may interest you including the docuseries The Surgeon’s Cut where four surgeons reflect on their lives and professions. Room 2806: The Accusation follows the 2011 sexual assault case involving French politician Dominique Strauss-Kahn at the height of his career. Pick of the Litter sees five Labrador puppies embark on a 20-month training to pass the milestones on their journey to becoming guide dogs for people with visual impairment. In Giving Voice six ambitious student actors audition for the prestigious August Wilson Monologue Competition, culminating in a riveting final round on Broadway. Emicida: AmarElo – It’s All For Yesterday sees rapper and activist Emicida celebrates the rich legacy of Black Brazilian culture. André & his olive tree follows Michelin-starred Chef André Chiang as he prepares to close his restaurant and embarks on a personal and emotional journey of reflection.

TV this week includes the Japanese sci-fi thriller Alice in Borderland where a gamer and his two friends find themselves in a parallel Tokyo, where they’re forced to compete in a series of sadistic games to survive. In the Taiwanese crime drama strange occurrences afflict a group of people after they purchase items on a shopping website from the future. In the Spanish drama The Mess You Leave Behind a teacher starts her job at a high school but is haunted by a suspicious death that occurred there weeks before… and begins fearing for her own life. Finally for TV this week we have Mr. Iglesias Part 3 and How to Get Away With Murder season 6.

For family viewing this week we have A Giant Jack Christmas an animated short film that sees Santa crash-land in a junkyard on Christmas Eve, so Hank, Trash Truck and their animal friends have to help save Christmas for everyone. In Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted the animals join a struggling European circus to try to get back to New York, but find themselves being pursued by a psychotic animal control officer. In the animation Mighty Express: A Mighty Christmas the Mighty Express welcomes a new train and speeds into a snowstorm to deliver Santa’s presents and save Christmas for all the kids in Tracksville. In Super Monsters: Santa’s Super Monster Helpers the monsters lend a hand and a bit of monster magic to Santa to make sure he gets every gift ready on time. Also added this week was the interactive Spirit Riding Free: Ride Along Adventure where you help Lucky and her friends as they try to save Maricela’s beloved mare from greedy horse thieves who’ve taken her captive with a wild herd.
