The Best New Additions on Netflix UK This Week (9th April 2021)

For films this week we have the drama The Fisherman’s Diary where Ekah is determined to go to school in a village of fishermen where a girl child’s education is considered a taboo. Her drive to break this old adage gets her embroiled with her father, Solomon’s past. In the superhero comedy Thunder Force two childhood best friends reunite as an unlikely crime-fighting superhero duo when one invents a formula that gives ordinary people superpowers. In the Oscar nominated short film Two Distant Strangers cartoonist Carter James’ repeated attempts to get home to his dog are thwarted by a recurring deadly encounter that forces him to re-live the same awful day over and over again. In the action thriller American Assassin Mitch Rapp is drawn into the world of counterterrorism, after the death of his girlfriend at the hands of terrorists, and is mentored by tough-as-nails former U.S. Navy S.E.A.L. Stan Hurley.

For TV this week on Netflix UK we have The Big Day where for six engaged couples, happily ever after begins on a spectacular note in this eye-popping look at India’s multibillion-dollar wedding industry. In the anime Heaven Official’s Blessing a deity who was banished to the mortal realm to exorcise ghosts must reckon with a demon and soon uncovers a dark secret behind the heavenly gods. In the crime drama Snabba Cash the lives of an ambitious businesswoman, a charming gang enforcer and a troubled teen collide amidst a desperate and sinister pursuit of wealth. In the anime shorts  series The Way of the Househusband the legendary yakuza Tatsu, “the Immortal Dragon,” who disappeared from the underworld resurfaces – as a fiercely devoted stay-at-home husband. Finally for TV we have US reality TV series The Wedding Coach which sees former bride and forever comedian Jamie Lee share her irreverent yet practical tips and tricks for wedding planning with struggling lovebirds.

For those who like to watch documentaries we have This Is a Robbery: The World’s Biggest Art Heist which takes a deep dive into the notorious the 1990 crime, which saw two men dressed as cops con their way into a Boston museum and steal a fortune in art. Coded Bias investigates the bias in algorithms after M.I.T. Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini uncovered flaws in facial recognition technology. Dolly Parton: A MusiCares Tribute is a star-studded evening of music and memories, as a community of iconic performers honour Dolly Parton as the MusiCares Person of the Year. Ibrahim a Fate to Define follows Lina who is investigating the disappearance of her father, Ibrahim, who was a secret agent for a Palestinian militant group.

For children and families this week we have part 3 of the Netflix Original Family Reunion which sees the McKellan family move from Seattle to Georgia to be closer to extended family, but they soon find the transition is a bit like being a catfish out of water. In the Malaysian pre-school animation Upin&Ipin two mischievous yet lovable five-year-old twins and their friends enjoy daily life and new discoveries with the residents of their Malaysian village. In the interactive special The Last Kids on Earth: Happy Apocalypse to You you can help Jack and his monster-battling friends make choices to stay alive and have some fun.
