The Best New Additions on Netflix USA This Week (18th September 2020)

If you want to know what to watch this weekend then we’re here to give you the lowdown on this week’s biggest and best additions on Netflix USA. Here we will give you our top picks as well as a full list of everything added to the streaming service in the last week. So here are our top picks from this week’s additions on Netflix USA:

The most popular addition this week has been the classic 1975 drama One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Set in a mental hospital, McMurphy inspires his fellow patients to rebel against the authoritarian rule of the head nurse. We’ll mention this later, but if you like this classic then you may want to watch the new Netflix series ‘Ratched’ which serves as a prequel to the film. In the British action/crime film Bastille Day (aka ‘The Take’) a skilled pickpocket is forced to help a no-nonsense CIA operative track a terrorist group in Paris. The highly rated romantic drama Raising Victor Vargas arrived this week and sees a Lower East Side teen-ager struggling to find some sanity while surrounded by his eccentric grandmother, his crazy new girlfriend, and his longing younger brother.

For Netflix Originals we have the thriller The Devil All The Time where sinister characters converge around a young man devoted to protecting those he loves in a postwar backwoods town teeming with corruption and brutality. There is also a Spanish thriller The Paramedic where a recently wheelchair-bound man develops a deadly obsession with the woman who left him and unleashes a sinister revenge plot.

For TV on Netflix UK this week we have season 2 of Criminal: UK – this time with four episodes instead of three. The police procedural show is incredibly gripping and the whole story takes place in the interview room. A new Netflix series Ratched is getting a lot of attention this week and serves as a prequel to the classic ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’, also added this week. The series looks at the earlier years of Nurse Ratched and how she became the hateful character she is known as.

British drama series Call the Midwife has returned with season 9 and follows a newly qualified midwife and her colleagues at a nursing convent in 1950s impoverished London. For true crime we also have the Cold Case Files Classic in which long-unsolved crimes are re-examined.

If you prefer documentaries then we have the incredibly emotional Hope Frozen: A Quest to Live Twice which follows a Thai scientist and his family as they cryogenically freeze their daughter who died from cancer at a young age. Challenger is a 4-episode series that takes a look at the lead up to the 1986 Challenger shuttle disaster using a mixture of archive footage and recent interviews with families, friends and NASA staff.

For kids and families this week there are a few of films and series that will be enjoyed. In The Smurfs 2 evil magician Gargamel continues his quest to tap the power of the Smurfs, creating a pair of his own “Smurf-alikes” called the Naughties. Wish Upon a Unicorn sees two sisters trying to save a magical unicorn and in Horrid Henry’s Gross Day Out Henry plans to watch a TV marathon of his favourite show “Gross Class Zero” and all the characters begin to come to life. For kids TV there is the new animated dinosaur series Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous as well as an animal-hospital style Izzy’s Koala World.
