Deadline are reporting the demise of the final two Netflix/Marvel Series “The Punisher” and “Jessica Jones” (the upcoming season 3 is due to be released later this year) – these may not come as much of a surprise after the “cancellation” of Daredevil, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. To be fair, creating four separate shows with different writers, and showrunners that then had to merge together to make “The Defenders” as well as the additional “The Punisher” series was a pretty big undertaking.
Now, I’m not wanting to start rumours, and this is total speculation, but has anyone else noticed the very careful wording when these shows are “cancelled”? “Marvel’s Daredevil will not be returning for a fourth season”, “Luke Cage won’t be returning for a third season”, “Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season”… Now, I may be looking too far into this but Netflix are saying the shows won’t be returning for more seasons – but what if the characters return in a new series? In the Marvel comics Luke Cage and Iron Fist join forces to create “Heroes for Hire”? We first came across The Punisher in season 2 of Daredevil – what if they start a new series together?
There will no doubt be plenty of people saying they’re being removed because of Disney+ starting later this year however don’t forget that Disney have stated it will be a family-friendly service – i.e. no R-rated shows (equivalent to a 15 in the UK) – and all the Netflix Marvel shows have been rated 18. Not only that but even if Disney change their minds, the contact for the Netflix shows states that the characters cannot be used on any other streaming service for at least 2 years after cancellation.
All this rumour and speculation aside, it’s unlikely that Disney were behind the cancellation of the Netflix/Marvel shows and, if they really are cancelled, it’s more likely to be a cost-cutting exercise as these shows were not made in-house at Netflix.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you think we will see more Marvel shows on Netflix or do you think it really is the end?
