The (Unlikely) Meanings Behind Stranger Things 4 Episode Titles – New Season Coming Summer 2022

Over the weekend Netflix announced all nine episode titles for “Stranger Things 4” as well as confirming the the new season will arrive in Summer 2022. The episode titles don’t really tell us much about the plot of the upcoming season but there are a number of titles that allow us to take an (un)educated guess at what might be involved. Let’s have some fun shall we?

Note – there are probably some spoilers in the following guesswork so if you’ve not seen up to Stranger Things 3 then maybe don’t read on…

  • Chapter One: The Hellfire Club
  • Chapter Two: Vecna’s Curse
  • Chapter Three: The Monster and the Superhero
  • Chapter Four: Dear Billy
  • Chapter Five: The Nina Project
  • Chapter Six: The Dive
  • Chapter Seven: The Massacre at Hawkins Lab
  • Chapter Eight: Papa
  • Chapter Nine: The Piggyback

Chapter One: The Hellfire Club

It was two years ago that the first episode title The Hellfire Club was announced and we now know that it is referring to the name of the Hawkins High School official Dungeons & Dragons Club – while this doesn’t tell us much story, it does show that even as the group has grown that their core hasn’t changed much. Joseph Quinn (“Overlord”) has been cast as Eddie Munson, who runs the Hellfire Club.

Chapter Two: Vecna’s Curse

Vecna is an incredibly dangerous demi-god in D&D so we are assuming that Mike & co. will use the name Vecna to describe a new evil entity of sorts – much like how the name ‘Demogorgon’ was used way back in season 1. Again, this doesn’t tell us much about the story.

Chapter Three: The Monster and the Superhero

Yeah, we have no idea either – but it sounds cool, right?! It could be something to do with Eleven (she has powers, so is really the only ‘superhero’ in the series) being hunted down by the Russians or some other agency – we already know from the teasers released so far that Eleven gets captured at some point in the series.

Chapter Four: Dear Billy

Step-siblings Billy and Max were introduced in Stranger Things 2 and quickly became important characters in the overall story. In Stranger Things 3 Billy was taken over by the Mind Flayer, kidnapped loads of people and created a giant spider monster. It was pretty awesome! Ultimately, Billy realised what was happening and sacrificed himself to save Hawkins. This episode likely focuses on how Max, and the others, have dealt with the loss of Billy.

Chapter Five: The Nina Project

In season 3 it was revealed that the Russians were also trying to open a gateway into the Upside Down so it could be that, like Dr Brenner, the Russian’s are also using children. Nina is a relatively common girls name in Russia so could be the name of the first victim volunteer.

Chapter Six: The Dive

Again, not a clue with this one. It could be that Mike and co. start a new dance craze called ‘The Dive’ – this is the 80s afterall. We suspect we may be way off the mark with this one though. Perhaps this is where we are introduced to the Creel House as seen in the 3rd teaser? We can’t work out where else that could fit in based on episode titles alone.

Chapter Seven: The Massacre at Hawkins Lab

This sounds like an incredibly joyful episode… Judging by the second teaser, ‘Eleven, Are You LIstening?’, we suspect that this will be predominantly a backstory for Eleven and her time in Hawkins Lab being experimented on by Dr Brenner way before we met her in the original Stranger Things series.

Chapter Eight: Papa

This is more than likely a callback to the previous episode as Brenner’s ‘children’ referred to him as Papa. This could be another flashback episode but we think that would be too easy. At the end of season 1 it looked like Brenner had been killed by the Demogorgon but it was revealed in season 2 that he had, indeed, survived. Perhaps Russia’s Nina Project has forced him to come out of the shadows and try to find his ‘children’ – or could he be involved and working with the Russians?

Chapter Nine: The Piggyback

Another one that’s difficult, nay, impossible to guess at. If we had to guess, and to be fair that’s the whole point of this article, then we’d probably go with something like a number of Eleven’s cohorts joining forces – piggybacking off of each others powers – to defeat whatever bad guy or creature has caused problems throughout the season. Whether that’s the Russians, something that Dr Brenner has created, Brenner himself or something that the Russian’s have released during their experiments with the Upside Down.

Well, that’s it for our (likely incorrect) guesses at what will happen during Stranger Things 4 so now we just have to wait. We’re still hopeful for a new dance craze… But for now, here’s a recap of the four teasers we’ve been shown so far that introduce us to four new locations: Russia, Hawkins Lab (pre- Season 1), the Creel house and California.

The series has been a smash hit for Netflix since it’s release in 2016 and has propelled the careers of its stars including Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard and more. The previous season, “Stranger Things 3”, introduced a new location to the series in the Starcourt Mall as well as showing us a great deal about Russia’s involvement.
