This Week’s New Releases on Netflix UK (18th January 2019)

Another week has passed and, in case you missed our social media feeds, we’re here to give you the run down on this week’s additions just in time for your weekend binge sessions. Here we will give you our top picks as well as a full list of everything added to the streaming service in the last week. So here are our top picks from this week’s additions on Netflix UK:

There have been just over 50 new titles added to Netflix UK this week including a great selection of films, TV shows and Netflix Originals. The most popular films added this week are The Fault in Our Stars which sees two teens building their relationship while both having terminal illesses; and Loving – a film based on a true story of interracial marriage in 1958 that led to a case in the Supreme Court. Miss Sloane is a political thriller that sees a Capitol Hill lobbyist take on the most formidable opponent of her career.

If you prefer things to be more action-packed then some top picks for you this week would be the mind-bending sci-fi film InceptionThe Great Wall sees China being attacked by monsters and the country’s heroes defending alongside European mercenaries; The second of the Purge films, The Purge: Anarchy, which sees another annual purge where laws are ignored for 12 hours and killing is legal; horror film The Bye Bye Man sees some students inadvertently release a supernatural killer; and IO is a new sci-fi/fantasy Netflix Film where a scientist is trying to save a toxic earth and joins a man who is trying to catch the last shuttle off the planet.

As a somewhat random addition this week there is the 1999 ‘straight-to-video’ version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat – the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical starring Donny Osmond as the titular Joseph. It’s actually quite good and I’m sure you’ll find yourself singing along at times.

Popular TV additions this week are clearly led by the return of Star Trek: Discovery – season 2 of the prequel series follows on telling the story of Starfleet ship Discovery. New episodes are added weekly on a Friday and there are also 4 mini-episodes called Short Treks that you may want to watch too – read this article on how to find them. Comic book series Marvel’s The Punisher returns for it’s second season and sees Frank Castle, a former marine-turned-antihero, hunting out and punishing those responsible for the death of his family. Another weekly series that has returned from it’s mid-season break this week is Riverdale season 3 – with new episodes coming every Thursday.

Other TV highlights include the addition of season 10 of ITV comedy series Benidorm and season 3 of BBC period drama Poldark.

If you’re a fan of documentaries then we highly recommend Senna – the documentary about Formula 1 superstar Ayrton Senna; You don’t even need to be a fan of the ‘sport’ to enjoy it. Another popular addition is FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened – the story of the failed festival.

For children and family this week there are a number of top picks including the classic adventure Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; the scary story of ParaNorman; and CGI-animated origin-story Top Cat Begins. The DreamWorks series Trolls: The Beat Goes On! is now up to season 5 and there is also the reboot of Carmen Sandiego.

Don’t forget to look at the most popular additions this week and for all the Netflix Originals added today you can read our separate post.
