This Week’s New Releases on Netflix UK (28th December 2018)

Another week has passed and, in case you missed our social media feeds, we’re here to give you the run down on this week’s additions just in time for your weekend binge sessions. Here we will give you our top picks as well as a full list of everything added to the streaming service in the last week. So here are our top picks from this week’s additions on Netflix UK:

Another week has passed and we trust you had a pleasant Christmas! Things are about to get weird with a brand new, interactive Black Mirror film. Black Mirror: Bandersnatch is set in the mid 1980’s and follows a young game developer as he tries to create a new choose-your-own-adventure style game. The hook being that the film itself is a choose-your-own-adventure story with thousands, possibly millions, of different ways that the story can pan out. Check it out – then try it again a few times to see things change. Due to the nature of the film there’s no ‘runtime’ as such but it is reported that most viewings will be around an hour (unless you decide to loop back and change one of your previous choices…)

For the more traditional, non-interactive films this week there is the great sequel to a 90’s classic with T2: Trainspotting – the comedy/drama is set 20 years after the original and sees Mark Renton return to Scotland to reunite with his old friends Sick Boy, Spud, and Begbie. The Big Short is the true-to-life story of how a group of people noticed the forthcoming US economic crash and, instead of forewarning people, decided to cash in by betting against the banks. Avengers: Age of Ultron is a fun, superhero film from Marvel that sees a new threat the Earth and puts the Avengers at odds with the new enemy and themselves.

Overboard (the 2018 remake) tells the story of a rich, spoiled playboy who loses his memory after falling off his yacht. Tragic. However, the fun begins when the employee he underpaid decides to use his condition to her advantage. Staying with the comedies we have Swimming With Men in which an unhappily married accountant has a midlife crisis and joins an all-male, amateur synchronised swimming team. And finally for those who like thrillers there is The Domestics – set in a post-apocalyptic America a couple needs to travel cross-country through various deadly, gang-controlled areas to reach safety.

TV additions this week include the new Netflix Original documentary series Murder Mountain which, set in Humboldt County, California where marijuana is legal, tells of how visitors from all over the world frequently disappear and are never seen again. Selection Day is a new Indian drama series that sees two teen cricketers battling with their father and trying to decide between their future as cricketers or realising their own dreams. American crime/thriller series You has arrived on Netflix UK now and sees a charming bookstore manager go to extreme measures to insert himself into an aspiring writer he is obsessed with.

Anime fans have had a number of additions this week including the series DEATH NOTE which follows a Japanese highschool boy who discovers a book that gives him the power to kill people by writing their name in the book – along with their cause of death. Gaming-based series Hi Score Girl [Hai Sukoa Garu] has also been a popular addition along with the return of Vampire Knight.

For the younger viewers this week there are a few additions – most notably the New Year’s Eve Countdowns. These are short videos parents can use to trick their kids into going to bed early on December 31st by pretending it’s already 2019. Good luck trying it though – most kids have already watched them all before New Year’s Eve…

CGI animation Sing is certainly worth watching with the family and follows a koala trying to save his theatre by running a talent competition. Various animals perform a number of musical hits but the underlying story about family and friendship is what really shines through. Season 2 of Netflix’s teen comedy/drama series Alexa & Katie was added this week – this time seeing the titular friends hitting their sophomore year at high school. And, finally, something for the younger ones with seasons 1-3 of the children’s series Shaun the Sheep.

Don’t forget to look at the most popular additions this week and for all the Netflix Originals added today you can read our separate post. See you next year!
