This Week’s New Releases on Netflix UK (4th January 2019)

Another week has passed and, in case you missed our social media feeds, we’re here to give you the run down on this week’s additions just in time for your weekend binge sessions. Here we will give you our top picks as well as a full list of everything added to the streaming service in the last week. So here are our top picks from this week’s additions on Netflix UK:

With the new year (how is it 2019 already?!) comes a lot of additions – almost 100 in fact – including a great selection of films, TV shows, documentaries and stand-up comedy shows. The most popular film this week has been the British horror film Ghost Stories which is based on the popular stage show and stars Martin Freeman and Paul Whitehouse. The film follows a sceptical TV host, famed for debunking paranormal myths, who starts to believe there is something more to three stories he’s investigating. The classic psychological thriller Silence of the Lambs is worth revisiting and follows FBI trainee Clarice Starling as she picks the brain of psychiatrist-turned-cannibal Hannibal Lecter in order to solve a new set of murders. Murder Party has been a popular addition too this week – a horror/dark-comedy that sees a lonely man attend a Halloween party only to discover that the art students throwing the party intend to kill him for a project.

Turning to something lighter we have the classic 1980 comedy Caddyshack starring Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and more. In this wacky film a young golf caddy gets entangled in crazy goings on at an exclusive country club while the groundskeeper tries to dispose of a pesky gopher. Hitch is a romantic comedy starring Will Smith as a man who helps people make a good impression on their first dates. A more laid back film is The Bookshop – a drama film which sees a young widow open a bookshop in a small seaside town in 1959 much to the locals’ disgust. And, if that’s a bit too laid back then why not try the sci-fi action film Pacific Rim which has pilots controlling giant fighting robots in order to save the world.

For TV there are some great new additions this week on Netflix UK but first some news. If you noticed last week that seasons 1-6 of Pretty Little Liars was removed then you’ll be pleased to know they’re now back so that UK viewers can now watch the show in it’s entirety again alongside season 7. Season 10 of Doctor Who has been added which is Peter Capaldi’s final season (although the final episode The Doctor Falls and the Christmas special Twice Upon a Time are missing). There is also the BBC drama series Broken which follows a Catholic priest struggling with his faith. Season 2 of NBC sci-fi series Timeless has been added which sees a team of time travellers going back in time to protect history after a nefarious group attempts to change time by changing history. And, after a rather long wait, Netflix UK viewers can finally watch season 2 of horror anthology series Slasher: Guilty Party.

If one of your New Year resolutions is to get your home tidy then you might be interested in the Japanese tidying guru’s new show: Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. Or if you just want to relax to some pop music then have a watch and listen to the Taylor Swift reputation Stadium Tour.

Fans of stand-up comedy have a lot of new shows to watch this wee with loads of classic specials added from the likes of Bill Hicks, Sam Kinison and Tim Allen as well as some current comics like Tim Minchin and Gina Yashere. There are also over 40 up and coming comics from around the world in a new Netflix collection in COMEDIANS of the world.

For children and families there are some good additions this week such as the animated Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!, the classic Roald Dahl tale The Witches and the comedy film Zookeeper. For Netflix Originals there is the third and final season of A Series of Unfortunate Events as well as the weird and wonderful Nickelodeon co-production Pinky Malinky.

Don’t forget to look at the most popular additions this week and for all the Netflix Originals added today you can read our separate post. See you next year!
