See the Trailer for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” Starring Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman

Last Summer we announced that Academy Award Winner Viola Davis (“Widows”, “Fences”) and Chadwick Boseman (“42”, “Get On Up”, “Black Panther”) would star in Netflix’s adaptation of August Wilson’s award-winning play “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” into a feature film and we now have an official trailer. The film, which also stars Emmy Award Winner Glynn Turman (“Mr.Mercedes”, “Sextuplets”, “How To Get Away With Murder”), Tony and Olivier Award Nominee Colman Domingo (“If Beale Street Could Talk”) and Michael Potts (“Show Me A Hero”, “True Detective”) was filmed in 2019 and will be the late Chadwick Boseman’s first and final posthumous release after his death earlier this year. The film has an expected release date of December 18th but that is still to be confirmed.

Set in 1927, the film tells the story of Ma Rainey, the “Queen of the Blues,” who makes a record in a studio in Chicago while tensions boil between her, her white agent and producer, and bandmates.

Tensions and temperatures rise over the course of an afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago as a band of musicians await trailblazing performer, the legendary “Mother of the Blues,” Ma Rainey (Academy Award® winner Viola Davis). Late to the session, the fearless, fiery Ma engages in a battle of wills with her white manager and producer over control of her music. As the band waits in the studio’s claustrophobic rehearsal room, ambitious trumpeter Levee (Chadwick Boseman) — who has an eye for Ma’s girlfriend and is determined to stake his own claim on the music industry — spurs his fellow musicians into an eruption of stories revealing truths that will forever change the course of their lives.
