We previously announced that Netflix had acquired the worldwide rights, excluding the UK, to upcoming film “The Power Of The Dog” which stars stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee, and now we have the trailer. The film is about a charismatic rancher, Phil Burbank, who inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love.

The film, which is a adaptation of a Thomas Savage novel by the same name, is a co-production by See-Saw Films and Big Shell Films/Max Films and in association with Brightstar and BBC Films. The project has been developed with BBC Films who are also backing production. It will be produced by See-Saw Films’ Emile Sherman and Iain Canning, Max Films’ Roger Frappier, Big Shell’s Jane Campion and Brightstar’s Tanya Seghatchian, with Executive Producers BBC Films’ Rose Garnett, See-Saw’s Simon Gillis and Brightstar’s John Woodward.

Netflix is giving “The Power Of The Dog” a limited theatrical release on November 17th and on Netflix on December 1st. Transmission Films will be releasing the film theatrically in Australia and New Zealand. The deal excludes United Kingdom free TV rights, which are retained by BBC Films (although it will still be released on UK Netflix).

“The Power Of The Dog” follows wealthy Montana brothers Phil (Cumberbatch) and George Burbank are two sides of one coin. Phil is graceful, brilliant and cruel where George is stolid, fastidious and gentle. Together they are joint owners of the biggest ranch in the Montana valley. It is a place where men are still men, the rapidly modernising 20th century is kept at bay and where the figure of Bronco Henry, the greatest cowboy Phil ever knew, is revered. When George secretly marries local widow Rose (Moss), a shocked and angry Phil wages a sadistic, relentless war to destroy her entirely using her effeminate son Peter as a pawn.
